CP2000, CP14, LT11: A Plain-English IRS Notice Decoder
Every IRS notice has a code in the top right corner that tells you exactly what kind of letter it is. Here are the most common ones, in plain English.

CP14: first balance-due notice
The IRS believes you owe tax. Not an audit. Usually resolves with payment or a payment plan. Has a 21-day window before interest starts accruing differently.

CP2000: automated underreporter
The IRS matched a 1099 or W-2 to your SSN that doesn't appear on your return and is proposing additional tax. This is a proposal, not a bill. You have 30 days to agree, partially agree, or dispute with documentation.
CP504: notice of intent to levy state tax refund
Second-stage collection notice. The IRS can seize your state tax refund and is signaling broader collection action is coming if the balance isn't addressed.
LT11 (or Letter 1058): final notice of intent to levy
The IRS plans to levy wages or bank accounts in 30 days. Grants the right to a Collection Due Process hearing, which pauses collection if requested in time. Do not ignore this letter.
Letter 525: audit examination report
Proposes audit adjustments after an examination. You have 30 days to respond before the IRS issues a statutory notice of deficiency (90-day letter).
Letter 3174 / CP90: additional levy notices
Variants of intent-to-levy notices for specific situations. Treat them with the same urgency as LT11.
What every notice has in common
A code, a deadline, and a response path. Respond on time, in writing, and you usually keep your options open. Miss the deadline and the IRS's position becomes harder to challenge.
